Sunset over St Vincent’s Gulf,  Brighton Jetty, Brighton, South Australia

Environment

I live near the seaside suburb of Brighton, South Australia. Many of my boyhood days were spent in this area from Glenelg to Marino. I have walked, run, and swam in these areas as a boy, a teenager and now together with my wife, we love nothing better than to walk these beaches, being invigorated by the fresh ocean air, winter or summer or anywhere in between. Watching the ocean eating fish & chips is a favourite pastime.

My Story

I consider myself an ordinary Australian. I had a wonderful childhood, parents who loved me, enjoyed the playground playing with my friends and neighbours, learned at a public school, and went to church on Sunday. I loved to sing in the school eisteddfod choir, and the annual Sunday School anniversaries. Shops were closed on Sundays. It was a quiet day where we visited with our aunts & uncles, had afternoon tea, and life was great. I also loved to play tennis. Our family would not be considered as rich, but we were happy.

After I left school I landed a job as a trainee accountant, saved money, bought a car, found a beautiful girl, and got married. We bought a block of land with the assistance of parents, and built a house. I used to sail a Mosquito catamaran with a friend, go to the beach, play tennis and generally enjoyed life with friends.

One day, I said to some friends we had over to dinner – “there must be more to life than working, owning a car, buying a house, and furnishing it.”  Several years after that, I found out what was missing in my life.

I thought ‘What will our friends think?’ Then I realised if they truly are our friends it would not make any difference. It didn’t – they remained friends.
